History:In 1994 the Medicine Hat Police Service conducted an internal audit of the programs and services it provided to the community, and identified that a need existed for a program of volunteers that would assist and support the members of the Medicine Hat Police Service.
Based on the concepts of several Police Service Auxiliary programs, the Medicine Hat Police Service Auxiliary Program was spawned. Before recruitment could be considered there were numerous hurdles that had to be overcome. Policy and Procedure had to be developed, liability issues had to be investigated and resolved, training standards had to developed, and special constable designations had to be obtained to allow the Auxiliary members to carry batons and pepper spray, and finally budgetary concerns had to be addressed. The Medicine Hat Stampede Board has been strong supporter of the program, sponsoring it, since its inception.
What do they do?
The training consists of Policy and Procedure lectures, a basic introduction to law, and some officer safety training. Auxiliary Officers are then assigned to a Patrol Crew assisting them at all regular calls, checkstops and special events. Auxiliary members received on-going training through-out their tenure with the Service.
Once trained recruits receive uniforms and the associated equipment and assigned to a Patrol Crew. They are considered to be one of many valuable resources that the Police Service can access and accompany the officer to whom they are assigned to all calls.
Once their training is complete, Auxiliary Members are sworn under the Alberta Community Peace Officers Act.
How Do I Join?
The recruitment process includes the submission of a letter of intent, a personal resume', Personal Disclosure document (required), completing a lifestyles questionnaire, a physical test (PARE) and a polygraph test. It is the intent of the Medicine Hat Police Service to access two distinct groups of people. Those looking to use the Auxiliary Police Program as a stepping stone to employment in the law enforcement field, and those citizens of the community that were wishing to provide a community service.
Current status:The Medicine Hat Police Service currently has 18 Auxiliary Constables on staff. Medicine Hat Police Service is currently accepting Auxiliary Police applications. Deadline is May 5th.
