The Chief of Police is responsible for:
- The overall stewardship of the executive team
- The guardianship of the Service's Vision, Values and strategies
- The efficiency and effectiveness of all operations
- Empowerment of all executive members
- Liaising with the community, Corporation, and Police Commission
- Conducting Network scans at the provincial, national and international level

Bio – Andy McGrogan
Andy McGrogan was appointed to the position of Chief of Police in the Fall of 2008. With over 30 years of policing experience, he has worked in a wide variety of positions including general Patrol Duties, Communications, Canine, Tactical Team Member and Commander, Criminal Investigations, Professional Standards and Development. After serving as an Inspector of both “Support” and “Operational” services he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police from September of 2007 until his appointment to Chief.
In 2006, Chief McGrogan received his Masters of Arts in Leadership and Training through Royal Roads University. He has a passion for policing and finds pleasure in adding value to others. He is proud to be a part of the leadership team that serves the citizen’s of Medicine Hat by providing professional and progressive policing to the community.
The Chief is very active in the Community and sits on a number of boards including The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society, Canadian Police Knowledge Network, Alberta Association of Chief’s of Police and the Canadian Association of Chief’s of Police.
