Chief Gordon Earl Leadership Legacy Fund

On October 11, 2008, Chief Gordon Earl of the Medicine Hat Police Service passed away.

Chief Earl was an active leader in the community his entire career.  He recognized the importance of partnerships and tirelessly sought out other leaders to collaborate in the development and promotion of programs and strategies that would optimize the quality of life in Medicine Hat, the Province and Canada as a whole.

To celebrate Chief Earl’s contributions to the community and to honour his memory, the Chief Gordon Earl Leadership Legacy Fund has been established.  The fund is administered through the Community Foundation of Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta and recognizes Grade 6 students that have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills. Each year, elementary schools identify students from within the two local school districts and issue scholarships to students that demonstrate the qualities of future community leaders. Parents of recipients are encouraged to place the awards into an existing or newly opened Registered Educational Savings Plan.

Chief Earl was an active member of the community and understood that leaders had to be developed. He recognized that Grade 6 represented a special time in a young person’s development; a time when character is formed and skills and aptitudes could be nurtured. Chief Earl spent a considerable portion of his career mentoring young people and assisting parents and the schools in preparing them for community service.
