The Family Crime Unit (FCU) was initiated in September 2004 and is based out of the Police Service building as a result of a joint investigative initiative signed by the Medicine Hat Police Service and the Southeastern Alberta Child and Family Services Authority.
Within the Family Crime Unit, two Sergeants are dedicated to investigating crimes involving family violence, sexual assaults, child abuse and Elder Abuse. The team made up of two police Sergeants and one child protection worker, jointly investigates domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse cases when children are involved or are exposed to risks.
The unit is also responsible for assessing levels of risk and completing risk assessments in all domestic violence files. The purpose of the joint investigative initiative is to provide an improved interdisciplinary response to complaints of children at risk.
