What's a Firewall?
Simply put, a firewall is a protective barrier between your computer and other computers on the internet.

There are two different types of firewalls: hardware and software.

Software Firewall: A computer program designed to act as a firewall. Many provide protection from hackers and may include e-mail attachment protection, ad block and cookie control.

Hardware Firewall: A router is an example of a piece of computer hardware that acts as a firewall by securing internet or intranet access to your computer. If you are considering buying new hardware, it might be best to consult a professional as it can be confusing for the novice.

Try before you buy
There are also many sources to download trial versions of personal firewall software on the internet. Some of these will allow you to download the program and try it for up to 30 days before you buy. A few of the more popular download websites are listed here:

Good News for users of Windows XP! If your operating system is Windows XP, you can use the built-in Internet Connection Firewall. Follow instructions for enabling the Windows XP firewall on Microsoft's website.
