A drug is generally defined as any substance, other than food, which is taken to change the way the body and mind function. Mood altering drugs (psychoactive drugs) are drugs that can change the way a person thinks, feels or acts. These drugs may have physical effects as well, but the main thing that sets them apart from the other drugs is that they work on a persons mind and senses.
Drugs are usually described as legal or illegal. Most drugs used for medicinal purposes are legally available by prescription or sold “over the counter.” Some of these prescription drugs are psychoactive and have a potential for misuse. ALWAYS follow the directions given to you regarding a drugs proper dosage and interval taken as to do otherwise could result in very unwanted consequences. An example of a non-medicinal – non-prescription drug would be alcohol and tobacco products. Illegal drugs can include marihuana, LSD, cocaine, crack and crystal Meth. All drugs have the potential for misuse and may cause great harm to a person’s health or life style.
Alcohol is a drug that isn’t commonly thought of as a drug but is very prevalent during the holidays. Alcohol in moderation, used by consenting adults does not cause problems. It is the ABUSE of this substance that can ruin lives, cost jobs and even KILL. Please don’t drink and drive. If you have been drinking take a cab or let a sober friend drive you home. Remember: Friends don’t let friends drive drunk.
