Recruitment Efforts Getting Creative

Alberta C.O.P.S. Tap into Gaming Market to Attract New Recruits

Calgary – Representatives from Alberta C.O.P.S. (Career Opportunities in Police Services) gathered today to launch their latest recruitment tool Impaired Driver – get them off the streets, a first-person video game.

The development of a video game was a creative approach to talk to young people in a medium that they are comfortable with.

“There are some key skills incorporated into the game that make good police officers, like decision-making and observation skills. We hope that agencies across the province can use this as an interactive tool to assist them in finding the best recruits possible for their service,” stated Tamara Fahlman, Project Manager for Alberta C.O.P.S.

Impaired Driver starts out in a typical Parade Room where officers are given their marching orders for the shift. The player is then expected to complete three tasks within a specified time frame testing a variety of skills along the way. The game is meant to give players a quick glimpse into a patrol or general duty constable’s world. It will be available for all Alberta police agencies to use at career fairs and presentations or for download from their websites (including albertacops.ca).

To go along with the video game, the program has been working with students on campuses in the development and execution of on-campus recruitment marketing campaigns. Students from Alberta College of Art + Design have created a career fair package for Alberta C.O.P.S. Their ideas include an interactive touch screen with stories from different officers and an attention-getting ‘mug shot’ wall.

“Having the opportunity to work with Alberta C.O.P.S. has been nothing but a positive and exciting experience. It has been both fun and challenging working together to create different elements that will help increase recruitment for Alberta C.O.P.S.,” said Allison Forgay, a student from ACAD.

“Policing is all about partnerships and what better way to find high-caliber applicants than to form partnerships with Alberta’s outstanding post-secondary institutions who through Alberta C.O.P.S. have been helping us reach youth who we will need to continue to deliver the highest level of policing services to Albertans,” stated Constable Steve Murray.

Alberta C.O.P.S. is a provincial project supported by the Alberta Solicitor General that represents all 12 police agencies throughout the province. Recruiting times have changed over the past several years and Generation Y has stumped even the largest organizations on how to talk to them…Alberta C.O.P.S. found an engaging way to do that. The development of a video game was a creative approach to talking to young people in a medium that they are very comfortable with.

Impaired Driver has been produced by Firetext, an Edmonton-based company that specializes in video games and interactive technologies. The team has been working on this development for over a year and is proud to know it will inspire future Alberta police officers.
