School buses transport hundreds Medicine Hat and area school children every day. As a responsible motorist it is up to you to ensure they get to school safely.
- Alternating flashing amber lights mean a bus is slowing down to stop. Do the same.
- No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP whenever approaching a stopped bus with activated alternating flashing red lights - unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway.
- Motorists should always watch for children crossing the road and be prepared to slow down or stop. Though they have clear instructions from their drivers, children may dart out from in front or behind a bus at any time.
- The speed limit in all our school zones and playgrounds is 30 kilometres per hour (40 Kmh in rural areas). Pay attention to posted speed limits, they are there for our children’s safety.
- Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert and cautious when approaching a school bus, you are contributing to school bus safety.
