A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing?

Internet Safety Tips
PLUS 3 Instant Messaging Tips

Tip Number One
Just like the wolf in sheep's clothing, NEVER trust that people you meet on the internet are really who they say they are. Anyone can make up a false identity on the internet.

Tip Number Two
NEVER give out personal information. This means you should use a nickname while you're online and never give your address, phone number, or even the name of your school. That includes personal information on online forms. Many forms look like entry forms to win free stuff but they could be tricks to get your personal information. That information could be used to harm you later.

Tip Number Three
Never give your passwords to anyone on the internet.
Don't use really easy to guess passwords and remember to change them regularly.

Tip Number Four
NEVER agree to meet anyone you've met online. Even if they act like your best friend. Like the wolf in sheep's clothing, you can't be sure who you're talking to on the other computer.

Tip Number Five
NEVER download files from someone you don't know. Even your friends might accidentally send you files containing viruses. Don't open any attachments without your parent's permission.

Tip Number Six
DON'T gossip or "flame" other people on the internet. If you do send nasty emails, sooner or later it will come back to get YOU.

Tip Number Seven
Don't click links to websites you receive by email unless it is from someone you know. Links you receive from Spammers or other unknown sources could lead you to sites you don't want to view, or worse - to download a virus!

Tip Number Eight
If you feel uncomfortable or afraid about a situation that you've gotten into on the internet, ask an adult you know for help. Don't try to fix it yourself or hope that it just goes away. It could get worse.

3 TIPS FOR
INSTANT MESSAGING

  1. Just like email, NEVER give out personal information.

  2. Don't receive any files without your parent's permission. Even if they look like they are just pictures, many files contain harmful viruses.

  3. Don't add strangers to your buddy list. If someone you don't know asks to be added to your list, don't be afraid to say NO.
