MEDIA RELEASE FILE # 05-011407 * * * New Media Release Regarding Licensing * * * As a result of our current animal licensing campaign our license sales for the month of June are triple that of June 2004. We are also encouraged to see that we are not only identifying unlicensed animals but we are also clearing up some out of date records that will assist us in being more effective in locating lost pets and returning them home. While we continue to do go door to door to identify unlicensed animals, we have now begun our second phase of the campaign, that being the enforcement of the licensing sections for those that have been identified and have still not licensed their animals. A reminder to everyone that all cats and dogs residing in the City of Medicine Hat are required by City bylaws to have a valid City of Medicine Hat license. There is a $250.00 fine for having an unlicensed dog or cat in the City of Medicine Hat. Licenses are available at City Hall, the Medicine Hat SPCA and the Police Service building. - 30 - Fred Crittenden

A recent check of our licensing system identified over 2500 other licenses that are delinquent for one reason or another. In some cases dogs have moved out of the City or have died and owners have not notified us of the changes. Unfortunately, many others have simply not been paid by the owners. In order to bring our records up to date and locate all delinquent dog and cat licenses, Municipal Bylaw Enforcement staff have commenced a door to door campaign to educate about dog and cat licensing and take enforcement actions as required. The Dog and Cat Bylaws of the City of Medicine Hat states that every dog and
cat over the age of three (3) months of age must have a valid dog license. The
cost of an annual dog license is $15.00 for a dog under six (6) months of age
or has been spayed or neutered. Those dogs that have not been spayed or
neutered must pay a $30.00 annual license fee. Cat license fees range from Full information on animal licenses and other bylaw issues can be obtained by calling our office at 529-8447. - 30 - * * * Media Info - for more information, please contact S/Cst Fred Crittenden
