Police Investigating In-Custody Death File: 2005: 26133

On the evening of October 27th, 2005 at 21:57 hours police received a complaint of an intoxicated male at the Esplanade located at 401 1st Street Southeast Medicine Hat, Alberta. Medicine Hat Police attended, and after investigation and inquiry, arrested a 46 year old Medicine Hat resident for public intoxication. The male, was cooperative and was arrested without incident. He was transported to the Medicine Hat Remand Center where he was to be to be held until he was sober.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the male was checked regularly throughout the night and at approx. 0335 hours a Corrections Officer, noted that the male was unresponsive. First response medical treatment was provided by remand staff and 911 was immediately contacted. The male was stabilized by paramedics at the remand center, and then transported to the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. He died at around 14:30 hrs. yesterday afternoon (October 31, 2005).

The Medicine Hat Police Service is continuing the investigation with the full cooperation of the Medicine Hat Remand Centre.
