On August 26, 2007 in the early morning hours the Medicine Hat Fire
Department responded to two fires. The first fire was on the South side of
the South Saskatchewan River, under the train bridge. The second fire was to
the Central Block Apartment building, located at 635 2 Street SE.
The first fire resulted in minimal damage to some old mattresses and
personal effects left under the bridge, but the second fire caused $625,000 in
damage to the building.
The Medicine Hat Police Service, through extensive investigation, has been
able to identify and charge 18 year old Daniel Edward HUGHES in relation to
these two events. HUGHES has been charged with one count of Arson for the
fire under the bridge; one count of Break Enter and Commit Arson, as well as
one count of Arson, in relation to the Central Block Apartment Building.
HUGHES is appearing in morning court on September 6, 2007 to speak to these
charges.
