On January 10th, 2008 at approximately 8:45 p.m., patrol members from the Medicine Hat Police Service were dispatched to a call of a suicidal male staying at one of the Motels along Gershaw Dr. S.W. Medicine Hat, AB.
Upon arrival police were able to establish communication with the subject. After short negotiation, the male gave no notice & exited the suite advancing aggressively towards members of the Medicine Hat Police. The male subject failed to obey commands given to him by members as he revealed a sharp weapon
in his hand while still pressing on. One of the Medicine Hat Police patrol
members was fortunate to be in a position to deploy a Conducted Energy Weapon
which was immediately effective failing that, this could have easily ended
up in a lethal force confrontation.
E.M.S. subsequently responded on a precautionary basis. His physical state was
assessed and was determined to be in good form.
The Medicine Hat Police Service is currently reviewing potential charges
relating to this file.
