Text Release Date and Time: 2008-04-28 15

Dogs for Drug Free Schools Still align with Supreme Court decision

The Dogs for Drug Free School Program aligns with the Supreme Court of Canad a ruling. The dogs for drug free schools program has three components to it. Introduce a puppy into the schools which eases the approach of a student to talk to the School Resource Officer Presentation for all the students educating them on the negative effects of drug use. Focusing on the message "What do you deserve for life?" Demonstrate the dog's abilities to detect and locate drugs and to deter those students who might choose to bring drugs into the school. The School Resource Dogs are with the School Resource Officers in the school s every day. The dogs are with the officer during meetings, lectures and during the regular school breaks. If the dogs indicate the presence of drugs wi th out being directed or told to search the investigation will continue crim inally or by the way of the school act. The School Resource Dogs were never used to conduct random searches nor were they used to conduct directed locker or bag searches. As the Supreme Court stated dogs can be used in directed specific searches if there is justifiabl e suspicion of a crime.
