August 11, 2009 - High Speed Areas

The Medicine Hat Police Service would like to remind drivers to observe the speed limit in all areas of the City. Recent analysis of road user data collected has shown that the overall percentage of speed offenders within theCity is 4.62% in photo radar enforcement sites. However, Police have notedthat the following three roadways: Gershaw Drive SW, College Avenue and the2ndStreet SE playground zone have a higher percentage of speed offenders, withan average of 16.23% of drivers offending the speed limit in these areas.

In April 2009 the Medicine Hat Police Service began utilizing a safety messaging trailer to assist in providing the community with more information relating to the safe operation of vehicles. The trailer has the ability to display speed, road safety messages and gather road user data. The Service will be deploying the safety messaging trailer alone and in combination with photo radar enforcement on these three roadways in a focused effort to reduce speeds and keep our community safe.

Remember - Speeding increases the likelihood and severity of a crash. The faster a vehicle is moving, the less time the driver has to react to a hazard, and for other road users to react to that vehicle. A speeding vehicle requires more time and distance to stop, and is harder to control.
