September 14 -20th - Crosswalk Safety
Whether you walk, bike or drive it is important for everyone to follow
crosswalk safety guidelines.
As a pedestrian;
. Cross at marked crosswalks or traffic lights
. Make eye contact with the driver to ensure he/she sees you before you cross
. Obey any pedestrian signals and look left-right-left to make sure the road
is clear in both directions before crossing
. Watch for traffic turning at intersections or entering and leaving
driveways
. Cross only when traffic has come to a complete stop and look before walking
past stopped vehicles to ensure all lanes are clear first
As a bicyclist:
. Yield to pedestrians
. Remember that bicyclists are not considered pedestrians unless they are
walking their bikes.
. Use marked bike paths or multi use lanes when available
. Use extra caution when transitioning between bike paths, roads and
sidewalks
. Be aware that your actions are unpredictable to drivers and pedestrians
As a driver:
. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and at intersections
. Be prepared to stop at all marked crosswalks
. Be alert for bicyclists and skateboarders
. Come to a complete stop is a pedestrian is crossing or preparing to cross
. Never pass another vehicle that has stopped or is slowing down at a
crosswalk
For the week of September 14th - 20th the Medicine Hat Police Service safety
trailer will be reminding the citizens of Medicine Hat that "All
intersections are crosswalks - Watch for pedestrians". In addition to the
above safety tips, parents and caregivers are asked to teach and reinforce the
proper techniques for crossing the road safety with their children.
