Due to a number of vehicle entries and home invasions occurring over the past
couple of weeks in the Southridge, Vista, Hamptons and Southlands areas, the
Medicine Hat Police Service would like to remind residents to take the
necessary steps to protect themselves from thieves. Between the period of
August 2nd to September 16th, 2009 there have been 13 vehicles entries, which
occurred between the hours of 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, in these areas. Homes in
these same areas have also experienced break and enters where TV's and other
valuables have been taken.
There are plenty of ways that you can protect your home and vehicle from being
targeted for crime. Here are some tips:
- Always lock the door and close the windows when you go out, even if you will
only be out for a short time.
- Don't leave spare keys outside or in the garage or shed. Keep your spare car
and house keys out of sight in the house.
- Always draw your curtains at night and make sure that valuable items cannot be easily seen from outside. In your vehicle place all valuables in the
trunk.
- When away from home park your car in well-lit areas. Visible burglar
alarms, good lighting and security lighting can be used as deterrents.
- Mark your belongings
- Get to know your neighbors and watch out for each other's property.
Anyone with information in relation to these incidents is asked to call
the Medicine Hat Police Service at 403-529-8400 or Crime Stoppers at
1-800-222-8477. |
