On the 18 October 2009 at 0630 hrs, City Police responded to a motor vehicle
collision in the west bound lanes of the Trans Canada Highway just west ofthe
Box Springs Rd off ramp. It was determined through investigation a taupe
colored 1998 Windstar van had travelled at a high rate of speed east bound in
the west bound lanes of the Trans Canada Hwy through Redcliff and into
Medicine Hat. Several vehicles had to take evasive action to avoid colliding
with this on-coming van. A white 2009 Chev 1/2 ton truck that was westbound on
the Hwy attemped to avoid a collision with the east bound van. The two
vehicles collided head on causing about $70,000 damage to both vehicles.
Boththe driver of the van and the driver of the truck sustained minor non-life
threatening injuries. They were treated and released.
The investigation has determined that alcohol was a factor regarding this
collision. The driver of the east bound van has been identified as Gary Butt
Age 48 of Medicine Hat. Butt has been charged with Dangerous Driving, Impaired
Operation of Vehicle, Refuse to Supply Blood Sample and Criminal Hit & Run. Butt was subject to a Bail Hearing on the 18 October 2009 which was
adjourned to Provincial Court for the 20 October 2009 at 0930 hrs. The
investigation is continuing.
