November 2009 Bylaw Education and Enforcement Program
As winter approaches the community is reminded that taking some very
simple steps to ensure you comply with City of Medicine Hat Bylaws will go a
long way in ensuring the safety of everyone using the public sidewalks and
roads during the winter.
Bylaw 1556 requires the owner or occupant of any premises adjoining a sidewalk
to clear away any snow, ice, dirt or other obstruction from a sidewalk within
twenty-four hours after the time such snow, ice, dirt or other obstruction was
deposited or formed on the sidewalk. It is also important to remember that
only snow from the public sidewalk may be placed on the roadway. Snow from
your driveways, parking lots and other parts of the property must stay on your
property.
Extension cords are important in ensuring your car starts in the cold winter
morning, but they must be no less than 8 feet above the sidewalk to
ensurethat they are not a hazard to pedestrians.
Failing to clear the snow properly from the public sidewalk, placing snow on
the roadway or for having an extension cord lay across a sidewalk could
result in fines from $100 to $10,000. Violators may also be responsible for
the cost of removal of any snow or ice that has not been removed properly.
Trailers should be removed from the street to ensure that they do not add to
the hazards on the streets during the winter. Bylaw 2434 states that holiday
trailers can be parked on the street while unattached for up to 24 hours for
the purpose of loading and unloading only. Other trailers such as utility,
boat and skidoo trailers are prohibited from being parked on the streetwhile
unattached for a vehicle that can tow them. Parking a trailer on the
street contrary to Bylaw 2434 can result of fines of $50.00 in addition to the
possibility of the trailer being towed at the owner's expense.
