Update on Animal Protection Act File
On November 18, 2009 a search under the Animal Protection Act was conducted on
a residence in Medicine Hat that was previously reported as having over 100
cats. The search was conducted by two Community Peace Officers of the
Medicine Hat Police Service Municipal Bylaw and Enforcement Section and a
veterinarian to determine the health and current living conditions of animals
remaining at the residence.
The search revealed that all of the animals appeared to be properly taken care
of and in good health. The condition of the 102 cats relinquished by the
owners over the past few weeks is still being documented. The documentation
includes veterinarian records from several clinics throughout southern Alberta.
Once received the documentation will need to be reviewed and verified in order
to determine what if any charges can be laid under the Animal Protection Act.
A person who contravenes this Act or the regulations is guilty of an offense
and liable to a fine of not more than $20,000. In addition if the owner is
found guilty of an offence, the Court may make an order restraining the owner
from continuing to have custody of an animal for a period of time specified by
the Court.
