Bicycle Safety

Once again it is that time of year, the golf courses are open, the t-shirts are on and yes the cyclists are on the road. Whether you are an avid cyclist or you ride only once a year it is important that you practice safe cycling. There are so many accidents that involve bikes and there are numerous injuries that result from those accidents. Here are some tips for safe riding:

  • Always wear a helmet. It is important that you have one that fits properly and is safety approved.
  • Make sure that your bike is the right size for you and that everything is in good working order.
  • Wear bright colored clothing; this enables other motorists to see you better.
  • Your bike should have reflectors on the front and rear of the bike as well as on the pedals. Your bike should also be equipped with a bell or a horn.
  • Do not cycle after dark or in bad weather conditions.
  • Stop before riding into traffic from a roadway, sidewalk or parking lot.
  • Look both ways before entering traffic.
  • Obey all the traffic signs and signals. You should also walk your bike across the street in a designated crossing area.
  • Stay on the right hand side of the road, and always ride single file in the same direction as traffic.
  • Always use your hand signals when stopping or turning.

If you follow these rules you will find your cycling much more safe and enjoyable, for everyone.
